Power Adapters And Markets
Serial EU moaner John Gruber, responding to a measured approach from Nick Heer:
I suspect there are going to be a lot of Europeans who buy a new M5 MacBook Pro and wind up charging it with inexpensive low-watt power adapters meant for things like phones, and wind up with a shitty, slow charging experience.
Whilst some of the thoughts on this are measured, most if it is a non issue. Take for instance the issue above. How small is the Venn diagram cross over between:
- Can afford a MacBook Pro
- Can’t afford a 97kw charger
- Doesn’t listen to advice
- Doesn’t care about power adapters
Perhaps some people will end up with an underpowered charging solution, but I bet they just deal with it. Put the MacBook on charge overnight and not worry about it. Or perhaps they buy the charger that’s recommended by almost every retailer, the same as offering a plug for your iPhone, and the world continue to revolve.
Only around 50% of households had a computer in 2021, and I’d bet that number is even lower now. I'd bet those that buy a MacBook Pro know more than a bit about the computer they are buying, now more than ever.
